What is the difference between interest income and coupon income on bonds?

They are the same thing. The interest paid by a bond issuer is called a coupon. When the issuer pays your coupon (periodically or at maturity), that amount is your interest income and is taxable at your slab rate. The coupon rate is the annual interest rate stated on the bond. For example, a bond with a face value of INR 1,000 and a 9% coupon pays you INR 90 per year as interest income.

Will TDS be deducted at source if I hold a bond for only part of the year?

Yes — the issuer calculates the actual interest paid or accrued to you during the financial year. If that amount crosses INR 10,000 (even for a partial year), TDS will be deducted. For example, if you invest in a bond in January 2027 and it pays INR 2,500 of interest before March 2027, TDS will not be deducted for that year. But if the interest paid in that partial period exceeds INR 10,000, TDS will apply.

Can I avoid TDS being deducted?

Yes — if you are eligible. You can submit a TDS exemption declaration to the issuer, which tells them that your total income is below the taxable limit and no tax should be deducted. Under the new Income Tax framework (from April 2026), the applicable forms are Form 121 and Form 128, which replace the earlier Forms 15G/15H and Form 13. Form 121 (for bonds) and Form 128 (for SDIs) are valid for one tax year and must be renewed annually. You must be an Indian Resident Individual or HUF to be eligible. Your tax liability for the tax year must be nil.

What are the KYC documents needed to sign up with Grip?

To ensure a smooth signup process, we request the below mentioned documents from you. Please note our one-time KYC process follows norms prescribed by SEBI. We also take the privacy of your information very seriously and follow an ISO certified process. a. PAN Card: Please upload your PAN card on Link. This document helps us verify your identity as per compliance.. b. Aadhaar Card: . An Aadhaar card is required for identity verification and is a crucial document in the onboarding process. Upload a copy of your Aadhaar card to DigiLocker or provide us access to the Aadhar details available on DigiLock by clicking on Link. c. Address Proof (if different from Aadhaar Card): In case your current address differs from the one on your Aadhaar card, please provide a document to serve as proof of your current address. This could be a utility bill, rental agreement, or any other government-issued address proof. d. Bank Account Details: We require your bank account details for seamless fund transfers and investment transactions. Please provide your account number, IFSC code, and bank branch details in the bank details module to complete the KYC. You can only invest in the investment opportunities on the Grip platform via the bank account you register with us through the KYC process e. CMR/CML or Holding Statement of Your Demat Account: If you have an existing Demat account, please upload your CMR (Client Master Report) or CML (Client Master List) or Holding Statement. This is a document provided by your Demat account provider of your stock broker. This document helps us ensure that your investments on Grip are credited to your Demat account.  In case you do not have a Demat account, please reach us at support@gripinvest.in To expedite the KYC process, we recommend that you ensure your documents are up-to-date on DigiLocker. Grip is integrated with DigiLocker and you can give access to your updated KYC documents via DigiLocker on the Grip platform.  Once these documents are uploaded on Grip platform, the documents go under verification and validation process. Please note that it takes 2 business days to complete the verification process and your KYC to get approved. After your KYC is approved, you can start your investment journey on Grip.

This KYC step is also mandated by SEBI for all brokers. Firstly, it helps us verify that the account is being opened for the actual user whose name is associated with it. This adds an extra layer of security to your investments. Secondly, it allows us to confirm the location of the investor. This is particularly significant because under SEBI regulations there are certain types of securities that NRIs are currently restricted from investing in. By taking a live photo, we ensure compliance with these rules and provide a secure and compliant investment experience to our users.
