How do we evaluate LeaseX investment opportunities?
  • Look for Ratings: LeaseX opportunities are credit-rated by leading agencies to assess their risk. The ratings, based on factors like the financial health of the leasing partner and asset quality, help ensure the investments are investment-grade. Higher ratings (e.g., AAA, AA) indicate lower risk, while lower ratings (e.g., BBB) offer higher returns but come with more risk. These ratings provide a clear understanding of both risk and expected returns.
  • Security Cover: LeaseX opportunities offer robust security cover through several layers of protection. The investments are secured by mission-critical assets essential to business operations, ensuring their value in case of default. Additionally, investors hold a senior secured position meaning they have priority over other creditors in the event of liquidation. Some opportunities also include third-party guarantees to further safeguard investments, along with insurance coverage on the leased assets to protect against unforeseen damages. These combined security measures help reduce risk and provide investors with added confidence in the safety of their capital.
  • Medium-Term vs. Long-Term LeaseX deals: LeaseX deals can range from medium (24 months) to long-term (36+ months). Medium-term LeaseX deals generally have lower yields and risk, while long-term LeaseX deals can offer higher returns but come with more uncertainty.

Risks Involved

  • Credit Risk: Investing in InvoiceX opportunities carries inherent risks. Grip does not guarantee profit, capital preservation, or risk-free investments, nor can it assure returns on any investment. Additionally, while LeaseX is backed by assets, any depreciation or damage to these assets could affect returns and principal repayment. Please read the information memorandum (IM) before investing.
  • Economic Risk: LeaseX, as a newer product, may have limited liquidity, especially in the secondary market, which could impact the ease of selling. Broader economic conditions and shifts in the leasing industry may also influence the investment’s performance, even with non-market-linked returns.
  • Investment Disclosure: The information provided on any opportunity is based on publicly available data and disclosures from originators. Investors are encouraged to read the rating rationale and thoroughly understand the associated risk factors before investing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is LeaseX Tradable?

LeaseX is a tradable instrument in the form of SDI, held in dematerialized form, offering a similar experience to buying, holding, and selling a bond. However, Grip Invest does not guarantee the ability to find a buyer, so investors might need to hold the instruments until maturity.
SDI was introduced by SEBI in 2008 under the SEBI (Issue and Listing of Securitized Debt Instruments and Security Receipts) Regulations. The first asset-leasing-backed SDI was listed on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) by Grip Invest on October 7, 2022. As of January 31, 2023, Grip Invest has listed four LeaseX transactions (in SDI format) totaling INR 41 crore.
LeaseX (in SDI format) is a SEBI-compliant, listed, and rated instrument, partially secured by a cash-collateralized bank guarantee and managed by an independent, SEBI-registered trustee. The monthly returns from LeaseX originate from contracted lease agreements with the lessee(s). Lessee(s) are decided upfront and cannot be changed during the tenure, unlike a mutual fund.
Only the monthly interest payout is expected to be taxed at the marginal tax rate of the individual investor; no tax should be payable on the principal repayment. Any appreciation in the price of the SDI, in case of sale prior to full tenure, is expected to be considered as capital gain and taxed accordingly. This should not be considered as tax advice. We urge you to consult your independent tax advisor.
LeaseX (in SDI format) are tradable instruments, meaning there is no lock-in on your investment. If you want to sell the instrument before maturity, you can do so in the secondary market at the market price, which may vary from the par value.
Yes, SEBI mandates KYC requirements for the purchase of SDIs to prevent money laundering activities.
